Boris Kodjoe Says Gaining Weight in Marriage is Unacceptable

In Cosmetics, Damn Musique, Fashion, Life, Natural Hair, The Damn Salon on September 18, 2013 at 10:12 am

So Boris says what he says and women go wild, claiming he is shallow and blah blah…. This is how I feel…. lightly…. I can Get deeper.

Boris didn’t say ANYTHING wrong. In fact he is absolutely right. People need to understand the same things you did to GET married are the same things you need to do to STAY married. Sickness is a different story but most women who gain weight after getting married don’t have sickness to blame…. but laziness. Meanwhile, your man goes to work everyday looking at fit women who took care of themselves to get to work. The last thing he wants to come home to is you in his dirty painted joggers eating biscuits fried chicken and chips. This is a part of the reason men end up cheating on woman. And then you have those “bigger” problems. “Keeping it sexy” will keep a man focused and excited to come home… to YOU….. and excited to take you out show you off and do all those things woman like, but complain that ‘he stopped doing once we got married.”  If you look like you should stay home, then home is where you will be when he is out in the city. There is NOTHING shallow about taking care of your health and your look. So get up right now and go run around the corner real fast. Or maybe run the whole building. Whatever. Run Somewhere. But don’t forget to subscribe first. (wink, wink)

Cheers!

You can do what with [dread] locs? Damn!

In Cosmetics, Fashion, Natural Hair, The Damn Salon, Uncategorized on January 20, 2012 at 11:34 am

We received a comment/question on the FAQ’s blog from the Natural Girl’s Rock event January 14, 2011 in Atlanta, GA.  Loc Lady left the following comment:

Installing the twists on top of locs?! How in the world? I have been toying with the idea of taking down or growing out my nearly seven-year-old locs; in fact, I have “test removed” and reinstalled a few, so I know it can be done, but it is tedious and a damn Herculean effort! I do miss the volume and fullness of the fro – of hair that grows “out” rather than down. So, please explain how any of the twist options can fully cover locs that are mid-back length or longer?

Loc Lady, we are happy to answer  each of your questions with a yes ma’am!  The Damn Salon’s City Twists and Urban Twists can be applied with your locs in tact.  The technique used is highly specialized and was developed by Mushiya, founder of The Damn Salon,  several years ago.  City Locs and Urban Locs offer styling options and variety to women with locs.  Adding City Twists or Urban Twists on top of your locs will create texture, volume, unmatched sexiness!

The technique is also great for covering thinning areas and bald spots.  City Locs and Urban Locs last for up to 12 weeks and require no maintenance.    Adding City Twists to your head of locs  can, breathe new life into what can sometimes feel like a very confining styling decision.

Now through the end of February,  City Locs and Urban Locs are available for $199 and up.  Schedule your appointment TODAY  404.832.0801.

FAQ’s from Natural Girls Rock Event “Natural is……The Freedom to be You!” Atlanta 1/14/12

In Fashion, Natural Hair, The Damn Salon, Uncategorized on January 16, 2012 at 5:25 pm

Hey Natural Beauties!   Davadivine, here to recap and answer a few of the many questions we received at the Natural Girl’s Rock “Natural is….The Freedom to be You!”  event January 14, 2012 in Atlanta, Ga.  At the event, Mushiya, Founder of the Damn Salon, hosted private hair health consultations .   There were many, many questions from new and veteran naturals alike.   A few questions and concerns kept coming up. We though we would address each of these questions in today’s blog.

Q.  Should I straighten my natural hair in order to trim it?

A.  No, never.  It is very possible and only logical that you trim your natural hair in it’s natural state.  Curly hair can be tricky to cut, but small sections, a steady hand, and a bit of patience goes a long way.   If a stylist tells you that she must straighten or blow out your natural hair in order to trim it….run.  A trained and experienced natural hair professional should be able to trim your natural hair without applying any heat what-so-ever.

Q.  I only straighten my natural hair for special occasions.  Since the last time, [I flat ironed, blow dried, pressed etc.], my curl pattern hasn’t returned.  What should I do?

A.  Sadly Darling,  the only thing you can do is cut off the hair that is heat damaged.  Contrary to popular belief  and fantasy, hair that is thermally damaged will not revert.  If you suspect that your hair is thermally damaged, you should start by deep conditioning it. Do this several times over the course of a week or so.  If  you still have limp unresponsive hair it will need to be trimmed before you can enjoy your natural curl pattern again.

Q.  I have a 2,3,4,xbq curl pattern, what should my regimen be?

A.  Huh?   The Damn Salon neither acknowledges nor advocates curl typing.   Nonsense!  [In my West African Accent].    Every individual has a unique and beautiful curl pattern.  Most people have more than one.  Regardless of where you are told you fall on some ridiculous chart, the basic tenants of natural hair care are the same.  You must detangle, shampoo, deep condition, moisturize and protect your natural hair be it straight, curly, or kinky.  If you are typing your hair so you can run out and buy curls in a jar, good luck with that!  No product will give you curls that you don’t already have.  Remember, haute hair begins with healthy hair.  Love your hair and you will love the results.

Q. What kind of product can I use to make my natural hair lay down?

A.  Stop trying to make your natural hair lay down!  Natural hair does what it wants to do.  That’s the beauty of it.  If you want hair that lays down, get a perm.

Q.  Should I comb out my [dread] locs?

A.  Uh, no.  While it is possible to comb out your locs, the process is extremely time consuming, expensive and potentially damaging to your natural hair.  It can take up to an hour or more to comb out each individual loc.  If you have ever used the interlocking method for tightening your locs, then double the time required for removal.  Should you decide to remove your locs, be prepared for a lot of breakage and shedding.  Your un-locked natural hair will likely be about 1/3 of the length of your locs.   There are many styling options for locs.  If you are bored with your locs, try roller setting, braiding or 2-strand twisting them for a bit of texture.  Oh, a little birdie told me that The Damn Salon is even able to install City Twists, Metro Twists, and Urban Twists on top of locs.  Removal should be a last resort…

We had an amazing time meeting Atlanta naturals and answering their questions.  If you have a question, please email it to dava@thedamnsalon.com. Until next time….

Curls don’t come in a jar.

In Fashion, Natural Hair, The Damn Salon, Uncategorized on December 13, 2011 at 10:50 am

Hello my lovelies. After an amazing weekend at the Nzuri Natural Hair Expo, I’m reflecting on a few conversations I had with Houston naturals.  Many of these beautiful women were frustrated with the arsenal of products they continue to collect on their quest for curls.  About this, I have one thing to say.

Kinky hair is in and of itself curly.  If you have ever examined a “nap” closely then you too have arrived at this conclusion.  So, why are black women spending millions of dollars annually on puddings, creams, gels, sprays, and other concoctions that promise what they already have?  There is nothing wrong with seeking a product to tame frizz, or define YOUR natural EXISTING curl pattern.  But you will not find springy spirals in a jar, if you never had them to begin with.

Understand that many of the products promising curls, contain glycerin and other humectants.  Humectants are products that absorb moisture from the air.  For hair that responds kindly to water, you will be fine.  But if your hair shrinks or frizzes when wet, then you will most certainly get what you pay for.

Don’t fight nature, embrace it.  Start with healthy hair.  After all, haute hair, begins with healthy hair.  Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!  Trim every 3 months.  Choose protective styles whenever possible.  Avoid heat like the plague.   Once you have mastered these principles, explore styling options that work with your natural curl pattern.  If your hair is very kinky, roll with it…literally.  Styles like finger twists and comb twists will produce awesome lasting texture with ease.  These styles also tend to look better as they age.  Gently separate the twist after a few days for greater volume and variety.

If you have a looser curl pattern the tried and true two strand twist will elongate and unify your curls.  The springy corkscrews can be worn for up to two weeks, depending on their size.  Larger twists will show their age a little faster.  Use a light oil, like The Damn Salon’s  Growth Serum, when doing your twist out.  You should enjoy natural spirals that age beautifully.  If you have wavy hair, try Bantu knots.  The knots alone are Avante Garde and exotic.  When twisted out they will provide you with big bold waves.  Think old Hollywood Glam.

Each of the styles mentioned is offered at The Damn Salon.  The Damn Salon’s suite of natural hair care products will enhance your natural texture by conditioning the scalp and hair, and promoting healthy hair growth.

Again. B!+ch your hair is not Natural.

In Fashion, Natural Hair, The Damn Salon, Uncategorized on December 4, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Obviously, this post is not intended to to be warm and fuzzy or make a bunch of new friends.  What it is intended to do is be a better friend to you than most people have been, by telling the blunt well deserved truth.  So here goes:  If you straighten, texturize, press, flat iron, blow out, hot comb, blow dry, or otherwise straighten your hair– Bitch, your hair is not natural.  Straightening the hair with chemicals or heat alters and ultimately destroys the natural curl pattern of the hair.  This is the antithesis of “going natural”.  Texturizing the hair,  is simply a misleading term for chemically stretching (straightening) the natural curl pattern. This also leaves the hair in an unnatural state.

Listen.  Perming, pressing, and texturizing are fine if you are aware of the damage these methods cause.  Even better if you like the results.  But it is important that you know that these methods forever change your hair.  Again, this is the very definition of unnatural, as it relates to the hair!

Why do people chose to straighten their hair in the first place?  The sociologist in me would like to site obvious reasons like self loathing, poor self esteem, and a desire to be anything other than self.  Reasons that remain sad remnants of colonization, slavery, and the adoption of European standards of beauty.  But, I digress.

The reasons most women site for straightening the hair are usually more benign.  “For versatility”, they say.  Well,  there are innumerable natural hair styles that can be achieved without the use of heat or chemicals.   Finger twists, comb twists, two-strand twists, flat twists, City Twists, Urban Twists, Micro City Twists, micro braids, cornrows, French braids  and the list goes on…and on.  Mind you,  all of these styles are available at The Damn Salon (#shamelssplug) .  These “natural” styling options are also easy on the hair even protective, to boot.  There is far more versatility in natural hair styles than there is in a feathered bob, no?

Then others say “I straighten my hair so it can be more manageable”.  Well, that just doesn’t make any sense.  If you can “manage” to wash, blow dry, flat iron and then curl your hair,  you can most certainly exercise the care and patience needed to tame your mane naturally.

For arguments sake, lets concede that many of the women who choose to straighten, so do because they don’t really know how to care for their natural hair.  Ok, but what if there were a simple, step-by-step system that made it easy?  Drum roll please…….

We would like to introduce The Natural Hair Care System, brought to you by The Damn Salon!  This fool-proof system  allows you to condition, maintain and style your hair natural without causing any damage.  This system  uses no heat or chemicals but produces hair that is shiny, healthy, and most of all manageable.  You will also be able to enjoy your hair at it’s full length, without being traumatized by shrinkage.

The Damn Salon will be debuting The World’s Natural Hair Care System at the Nzuri Natural Hair Expo in Hosuton, TX December 10-11, 2011.  For a limited time, The Damn Salon will be offering FREE hair health consultations.  We will custom design a treatment and maintenance program specific to your individual needs.  Call 404.832.0801 Today to book your consultation.
