Braiding Hair Illegal? WTF?

In Uncategorized on March 12, 2013 at 12:00 pm

Utah is one state, among several, who’s recent legislation makes it a crime to braid hair for money, without a cosmetology license. Mind you, at present traditional African hair braiding is not a subject that is taught in state approved cosmetology programs.

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if this is an attempt to quell African culture, and with it an income stream for Black women and immigrants. Or, is it an underhanded way for local governments to earn extra income from licensing fees? Can we really trust that this is an attempt to protect the public from negligent practitioners?

We want to hear your DAMN thoughts.  Please respond in the comment section.

  1. Can you spell conspiracy? Since when do they give aDAMN about AFRICAN HAIR or black women’s hair for that matter. Might they be trying what others are doing trying to capitalize on a market that has been exclusive to us?

  2. I understand both sides. I am natural, but I do not trust anyone in my hair who does NOT have a license.
