Ladies and gentlemen, clients, fans, followers, and everyone else.  The Damn Salon team would like to sincerely apologize for our blog post dated December 16, 2011.  The post cited an international news story in which a hairstylist was assaulted by a minister.  Though the details of this particular story were questionable,  assault of any kind is not a subject to be taken lightly.  We apologize if the post offended anyone.  We thank you for your readership, and continued support.

Hair, There, and Every Damn Where.

In Uncategorized on December 15, 2011 at 2:34 pm

The beautiful blogger Cassidy, author of the Natural Selection Blog recently tweeted a photo of Lola’s new look.  Lola is, of course the name of Cassidy’s gorgeous BAA.  (Thats big ass afro, in natural speak.)  This past weekend, while covering the Nzuri Natural Hair Expo in Houston, TX  Cassidy visited  A Taste of Damn, The Damn Salon’s touring salon. Her hair was styled in Urban Twists with a chunk of honey blonde in the front for a little extra DAMN.  She then had one side faded by a local barber.  Lola is looking haute as hell for the holidays!

For a limited time, Urban Twists are only $199 at the Atlanta Damn Salon.  Schedule your appointment now (before we stop sipping the egg nog)   404.832.0801.

Curls don’t come in a jar.

In Fashion, Natural Hair, The Damn Salon, Uncategorized on December 13, 2011 at 10:50 am

Hello my lovelies. After an amazing weekend at the Nzuri Natural Hair Expo, I’m reflecting on a few conversations I had with Houston naturals.  Many of these beautiful women were frustrated with the arsenal of products they continue to collect on their quest for curls.  About this, I have one thing to say.

Kinky hair is in and of itself curly.  If you have ever examined a “nap” closely then you too have arrived at this conclusion.  So, why are black women spending millions of dollars annually on puddings, creams, gels, sprays, and other concoctions that promise what they already have?  There is nothing wrong with seeking a product to tame frizz, or define YOUR natural EXISTING curl pattern.  But you will not find springy spirals in a jar, if you never had them to begin with.

Understand that many of the products promising curls, contain glycerin and other humectants.  Humectants are products that absorb moisture from the air.  For hair that responds kindly to water, you will be fine.  But if your hair shrinks or frizzes when wet, then you will most certainly get what you pay for.

Don’t fight nature, embrace it.  Start with healthy hair.  After all, haute hair, begins with healthy hair.  Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!  Trim every 3 months.  Choose protective styles whenever possible.  Avoid heat like the plague.   Once you have mastered these principles, explore styling options that work with your natural curl pattern.  If your hair is very kinky, roll with it…literally.  Styles like finger twists and comb twists will produce awesome lasting texture with ease.  These styles also tend to look better as they age.  Gently separate the twist after a few days for greater volume and variety.

If you have a looser curl pattern the tried and true two strand twist will elongate and unify your curls.  The springy corkscrews can be worn for up to two weeks, depending on their size.  Larger twists will show their age a little faster.  Use a light oil, like The Damn Salon’s  Growth Serum, when doing your twist out.  You should enjoy natural spirals that age beautifully.  If you have wavy hair, try Bantu knots.  The knots alone are Avante Garde and exotic.  When twisted out they will provide you with big bold waves.  Think old Hollywood Glam.

Each of the styles mentioned is offered at The Damn Salon.  The Damn Salon’s suite of natural hair care products will enhance your natural texture by conditioning the scalp and hair, and promoting healthy hair growth.

What?!…. You STILL oil your scalp?

In Uncategorized on December 8, 2011 at 6:23 pm

Me too, Darling!   No matter how old-fashioned and tedious the practice of oiling your scalp may be, it is a good practice to incorporate into your natural hair regimen.   If you are like me, you probably have childhood memories of the wide toothed comb, a jar of Blue Magic hair grease, and what seemed like an eternity sitting on the floor between Momma’s knees.  Well Momma was on to something ladies.

Oiling the hair and scalp is a great way to treat and prevent dryness.  What should be abandoned is not the practice of oiling the scalp, but the old-fashioned and unhealthy products we used in the past.  Any products containing petroleum and mineral oil should be strictly avoided.  These products will just attract dirt to your hair, and leave your hair looking heavy, greasy… and crazy.   Petroleum based products also clog your pores and prevent any useful ingredients from being absorbed.

What you want to use to oil your scalp are all natural, high quality products.  The Damn Salon’s Hair Butter  is a great example.  Jojoba oil, rosemary oil, shea butter, and vitamin E are only a few of the nourishing ingredients in this amazing proprietary blend.   Jojoba oil is very similar to the sebum your scalp naturally produces. Therefore it is easily and quickly absorbed by the scalp and hair.  This oil is light, and leaves the hair with a beautiful sheen, without weighty build-up.  Jojoba oil also treats and prevents flakiness of the scalp.  Rosemary oil is not only fragrant, but also stimulating. It stimulates the hair follicles leading to longer, stronger, thicker hair.  Rosemary oil also has anti-fungal properties which aid in the treatment and prevention of dandruff and other scalp issues.

By now, you are probably well aware of the moisturizing properties of shea butter and vitamin E.  So I will not turn this post into a dissertation.  The point my darlings is: moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.  Shiny, healthy, manageable, growing hair is hair that is property moisturized.

To order The Damn Salon’s products, visit http://www.thedamnsalon.com or call 404.832.0801.

Love your hair, and you will love the results.

Again. B!+ch your hair is not Natural.

In Fashion, Natural Hair, The Damn Salon, Uncategorized on December 4, 2011 at 4:29 pm

Obviously, this post is not intended to to be warm and fuzzy or make a bunch of new friends.  What it is intended to do is be a better friend to you than most people have been, by telling the blunt well deserved truth.  So here goes:  If you straighten, texturize, press, flat iron, blow out, hot comb, blow dry, or otherwise straighten your hair– Bitch, your hair is not natural.  Straightening the hair with chemicals or heat alters and ultimately destroys the natural curl pattern of the hair.  This is the antithesis of “going natural”.  Texturizing the hair,  is simply a misleading term for chemically stretching (straightening) the natural curl pattern. This also leaves the hair in an unnatural state.

Listen.  Perming, pressing, and texturizing are fine if you are aware of the damage these methods cause.  Even better if you like the results.  But it is important that you know that these methods forever change your hair.  Again, this is the very definition of unnatural, as it relates to the hair!

Why do people chose to straighten their hair in the first place?  The sociologist in me would like to site obvious reasons like self loathing, poor self esteem, and a desire to be anything other than self.  Reasons that remain sad remnants of colonization, slavery, and the adoption of European standards of beauty.  But, I digress.

The reasons most women site for straightening the hair are usually more benign.  “For versatility”, they say.  Well,  there are innumerable natural hair styles that can be achieved without the use of heat or chemicals.   Finger twists, comb twists, two-strand twists, flat twists, City Twists, Urban Twists, Micro City Twists, micro braids, cornrows, French braids  and the list goes on…and on.  Mind you,  all of these styles are available at The Damn Salon (#shamelssplug) .  These “natural” styling options are also easy on the hair even protective, to boot.  There is far more versatility in natural hair styles than there is in a feathered bob, no?

Then others say “I straighten my hair so it can be more manageable”.  Well, that just doesn’t make any sense.  If you can “manage” to wash, blow dry, flat iron and then curl your hair,  you can most certainly exercise the care and patience needed to tame your mane naturally.

For arguments sake, lets concede that many of the women who choose to straighten, so do because they don’t really know how to care for their natural hair.  Ok, but what if there were a simple, step-by-step system that made it easy?  Drum roll please…….

We would like to introduce The Natural Hair Care System, brought to you by The Damn Salon!  This fool-proof system  allows you to condition, maintain and style your hair natural without causing any damage.  This system  uses no heat or chemicals but produces hair that is shiny, healthy, and most of all manageable.  You will also be able to enjoy your hair at it’s full length, without being traumatized by shrinkage.

The Damn Salon will be debuting The World’s Natural Hair Care System at the Nzuri Natural Hair Expo in Hosuton, TX December 10-11, 2011.  For a limited time, The Damn Salon will be offering FREE hair health consultations.  We will custom design a treatment and maintenance program specific to your individual needs.  Call 404.832.0801 Today to book your consultation.
